Across Central Europe, the energy landscape is being rewritten. Fields once dotted with coal plants are now home to solar panels, and new battery sites are appearing near industrial towns. Yet nowhere is this change more significant than in Poland, a country long defined by its dependence on coal and now fast becoming one of Europe’s most dynamic solar markets.
In many ways, Poland’s story mirrors the region’s transformation. What began as a regional response to fuel insecurity has evolved into a deliberate strategy for clean energy independence, one in which Poland now plays a leading role.
A Solar Revolution in an Unexpected Place
According to Ember, Central Europe’s total solar capacity grew from about eight gigawatts in 2019 to more than forty-five gigawatts by 2024. A large share of that expansion comes from Poland. The country has added thousands of megawatts of new capacity through utility parks and small rooftop installations, making it one of Europe’s fastest-growing solar markets.
In 2024 alone, Poland connected roughly five gigawatts of new solar to its grid. That growth rate puts it ahead of many Western European economies. Solar now contributes around 14 percent of national electricity generation, compared to less than 2 percent five years ago.
“Few expected Poland to move this fast,” says an analyst from Ember. “The scale of small business and household investment in rooftop solar has been extraordinary.”
While Austria and Hungary have already seen solar overtake fossil generation in utility supplies, Poland’s trajectory points in the same direction. Every month, new photovoltaic projects are being approved under the state-owned energy group PGE and private developers backed by EU green funds.
Batteries Bring Flexibility to the Grid
Solar growth on its own is not enough to ensure reliability. For Poland, which still depends heavily on coal for baseload power, batteries are the next critical step.
Between 2022 and 2025, battery energy storage capacity across Central Europe increased by about 470 percent, and Poland is now catching up fast. The country’s first large-scale systems, including the 200 MW project in Żarnowiec, are setting a precedent for regional grid flexibility. New storage tenders supported by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility are expected to multiply to this capacity several times by the end of the decade.
Local manufacturers are also entering the supply chain. Polish firms that once specialized in electrical equipment are now assembling inverters and battery components for domestic projects. This growing industrial network is beginning to anchor the renewable sector within the national economy.
From Coal Dependence to Energy Independence
Poland’s energy system has long been synonymous with coal. Even in 2020, over 70 percent of its electricity came from lignite and hard coal. But the last few years have seen a rapid shift in both government policy and investor behavior.
High gas prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine accelerated the search for local, stable alternatives. The result has been a record wave of solar and wind projects, supported by new interconnections with neighboring countries. Power lines linking Poland with Slovakia and the Czech Republic are being reinforced, while new Baltic Sea grid corridors are planned to carry offshore wind and renewable power deeper into Central Europe.
What began as a crisis-driven diversification plan is turning into a long-term strategy for energy independence. As one Warsaw-based energy economist put it, “The challenge for Poland was never whether renewables could work, but how fast we could build them.”
Industry and Investment Momentum
The renewable surge has already started to reshape Poland’s industrial map. The southern regions of Silesia and Lesser Poland, once dominated by coal mining, are attracting investment in clean technologies, including solar module assembly and grid infrastructure. Battery producers from South Korea and the United States are establishing facilities near Wroclaw and Poznan, drawn by the demand for storage systems and electric vehicle components.
This industrial diversification has helped stabilize employment in regions that were previously at risk of economic decline. It also positions Poland as a key supplier within Europe’s emerging clean-energy value chain.
