Apple Signs PPAs in Greece and Romania to Power Green Future

In a push to fully green its device-charging electricity, Apple has backed renewable energy projects across Europe, committing to 650 MW of capacity via power purchase agreements (PPAs) and similar mechanisms.

By 2030, these wind and solar projects – spanning Greece, Romania, Italy, Spain, Poland, and Latvia – are projected to generate over 1 TWh of clean power to match the electricity consumed by Apple device users.

“By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP for environment, policy and social initiatives.

Greece: 110 MW Solar Deal

Apple secured a long-term PPA with HELLENiQ Energy for a 110 MW solar plant in Kozani, northern Greece – a facility that is already operational.

This arrangement helps anchor Apple’s ambition to align its energy consumption with renewable supply on a regional basis.

Romania: 99 MW Wind via vPPA

In Romania’s Galați County, Apple has agreed to procure power from the Green Breeze wind farm (99 MW), currently under construction, via a virtual PPA (vPPA).

The project was originally developed by OX2 and later sold to Nala Renewables. It is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2026.

Other European Moves

Apple’s renewables push isn’t limited to Greece and Romania:

  • In Italy, it is supporting a 129 MW portfolio of solar and wind projects, with a Sicilian solar plant coming online imminently.
  • In Poland, Apple is backing a 40 MW solar array by Econergy, slated to launch later this year.
  • In Latvia, Apple signed one of the country’s first corporate PPAs for a 110 MW solar farm built by European Energy.
  • In Spain, the 131 MW Castaño solar farm (developed by ib vogt) is already operational and part of Apple’s matching strategy.

These projects form part of Apple’s broader goal to neutralize the carbon footprint of device usage across Europe.

Why It Matters for Power-Loop Readers

Apple’s approach underscores a key shift in how major tech firms are internalizing energy procurement as part of their broader decarbonization strategies. For policymakers, grid operators and renewable developers, the move signals growing demand for long-term contracts and infrastructure as Europe races to integrate more renewables reliably.

Beyond emissions accounting, projects like these present challenges and opportunities in grid balancing, regional energy markets, and renewable financing – especially in emerging markets like the Balkans.
